CONCERTS BY CANDLELIGHT
In the midst of a world on pause,
friends Daniel Wood and Simon Gordon
lit a creative spark that’s since grown into
an international phenomenon. Their
brainchild, Concerts by Candlelight, has
taken live music to new heights, staging
electrifying rock concerts in awe-inspiring
cathedrals, theatres, and concert halls
across the Globe. THIS IS LONDON spoke
to Simon and Daniel about their success.
What can we expect at a Concerts by
Candlelight show?
Simon: Our shows always feature an
incredible live band and a cast of
extraordinary West End vocalists,
performing the hits of iconic singers and
bands. We have Queen, Fleetwood Mac,
Meat Loaf, Coldplay, The Beatles and
more. With over 20 different shows on
offer, the energy at each one is electric. By
the end of the night the whole audience is
on their feet, dancing and singing along.
But the music is only part of the magic.
The venues we perform in are iconic –
historical cathedrals, theatres and concert
halls, filled with hundreds of candles.
Walking into one of our shows is like
stepping into another world. The
atmosphere takes your breath away.
What’s really special is the diversity of
our audience. We see everyone from
groups of friends and couples on date
nights to families with grandparents and
youngsters – it’s something you don’t
often see at other concerts.
at Carnegie Hall, with a cast and band of
my closest friends really was a dream
come true.
Simon: St Paul’s Cathedral stands out
for me. About a year into Concerts by
Candlelight, we had performed in nearly
every cathedral across the UK, but no one
had ever staged an amplified rock concert
inside St Paul’s. After months of
discussions with their teams, they
entrusted us with the incredible
opportunity to bring rock music into one
of the world’s iconic venues.
What’s next for Concerts by
Candlelight?
Simon: We’re expanding our lineup
across the UK and Ireland with several
new shows, including Coldplay by
Candlelight and U2 by Candlelight.

What has been your most
memorable performance and why?
Daniel: For me it has to be Carnegie
Hall in New York. I produced my first
show when I was 11, persuading my
school teachers and some older students
to perform in it. I used to go to travel
agents as a teenager and pick up
brochures on New York, I saved for years
and years and when I turned 18, I went to
Broadway for the first time and watched
13 shows in a week! It has been a lifelong
ambition to produce a show on Broadway
and so to go over there and put on a show
