IL TROVATORE RETURNS TO THE
ROYAL OPERA
Revenge, betrayal and anarchic
medieval mayhem: experience
Il trovatore, Verdi’s opera of obsession
and superstition on the Main Stage at
the Royal Opera House this July.
Perhaps most recognisable for the Anvil
Chorus, and a spectacle in every sense
of the word, Adele Thomas’ ambitious
production combines animalistic
choreography with striking costume and
bold set design to truly transport the
audience. Enjoy one of the best
entertainment offerings in the capital this
summer, experiencing world-class opera
in the heart of London’s West End.
Troubadour Manrico and military
commander Count di Luna have become
rivals vying for Leonora’s heart. Though
Leonora loves Manrico, the jealous
Count will do everything in his power to
have her. Battles between the Count’s
army and Manrico's men ensue, and he
and Manrico agree to a duel.
Meanwhile, haunted by a gruesome
past, Azucena, Manrico’s mother,
harbours a secret that affects both
Manrico and the Count: years before, in
a vow to avenge the murder of her
mother at the hands of the aristocratic
Luna family, she abducted their younger
son. Will she reveal this truth, or will
she see her revenge through at any cost?
Conductor Carlo Rizzi leads two unique
casts bringing this dark and disturbing
tale of mistaken identity and forbidden
love to energetic life. A stellar cast joins
him; Riccardo Massi and Gwyn Hughes
Jones share the role of Manrico, Elena
Stikhina and Eleonora Buratto sing
Leonora, Etienne Dupuis and Igor
Golovatenko sing Count di Luna, and
Clémentine Margaine and Yulia
Matochkina sharing the role of Azucena.
Set and costume designs by
Annemarie Woods shape a production
that is full of ‘anarchic imagination’
perfect for those attending their very first
opera as well as seasoned attendees.
Il trovatore runs from 8 to 19 July.
