THE SOCIETY OF WOMEN ARTISTS
The Society of Women Artists are to
present a stunning collection
of original works, from some of the
finest women artists working today
from the UK and beyond, at
the prestigious Mall Galleries from
24 – 28 June.
Many renowned artists
with diverse interests will be exhibiting;
visitors will be able to browse 450
works, from members and nonmembers, including: oil paintings,
watercolours, drawings, etchings,
lithographs, screen prints, sculpture,
ceramics, portraiture, landscapes, and a
rich balance of abstract and figurative,
traditional and quirky.
This is a wonderful opportunity to
view work of artists who regularly exhibit
at the Royal Academy Summer
Exhibition, the Royal Institute of Oil
Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters
in Water Colours, the ING Discerning
Eye, the Royal Watercolour Society, the
Royal West of England Academy, the
Royal Society of Sculptors, the New
English Art Club, the Scottish Academy,
and the Royal Ulster Academy.
For many years, the SWA has
contributed to the Breast Cancer Now
Charity and at each year’s exhibition the
SWA offers a special evening for BCN to
host their own fundraising event with
contributions from sales on the night
and an auction of works donated by
members of the Society.
The Society also runs a special event
supporting their Young People’s Art
Initiative. This year it will be on
Tuesday 24 June from 18.00 - 20.30
when Dora Bertolluti, professional
photographer and wife of the late
Ken Howard OBE RA, will open the
evening’s proceedings, alongside guest
speaker Lisa Carrodus of Circles of Art,
a main sponsor of the SWA. For tickets,
visit the SWA website.
The SWA is an historic and important
society. It was founded in 1855 by
courageous and talented women who
were unable to exhibit in the maledominated culture they were born into.
Every generation of women since has
Roya Khalili - A Symphony of Hope
taken the baton and run with it with an
energy and determination that comes
through in their vibrant and eclectic
work today.
The Society of Women Artists’ 164th
Annual Open exhibition will take place at
the Mall Galleries.

HAIRY MACLARY AND FRIENDS AT
THE DISCOVERY CENTRE
An interactive trail and café exhibition
celebrating the beloved rhyming classic
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy is
at The Discovery Centre, Stratford, this
summer. Visit the doghouse in Story
World, where furry friends are waiting to
help you sniff out Hairy Maclary’s
lovable gang. Foster a dog during your
visit or bring along your own plushy pal.
Look out for Hercules Morse (as big as a
horse), Bottomley Potts (covered in
spots) and more. They are hiding all
around the building. But beware...
Scarface Claw, the toughest Tom in
town, might be lurking nearby.
The hunt continues in the Story
Garden, where visitors can uncover
seven dog bones. Head upstairs to the
café to explore beautiful illustrations and
gain a deeper insight into Lynley Dodd’s
creative process as both the author and
illustrator behind this timeless book
series. While you’re there, be sure to
visit the Care Centre, where you can
groom and health check the café dogs.
At the heart of Discover are two floors
of magical Story Worlds and a Story
Garden – immersive, exploratory play
spaces where children and their
imaginations can roam.
