RECORD NUMBERS RACE THROUGH
HACKNEY
The two-day Hackney Moves festival
culminated in the famous Wizz Air
Hackney Half Marathon last month,
which saw over 25,000 people sign up
in less than two weeks. Hackney Moves
festival welcomed over 60,000 people to
this year’s event as thousands took part
in, and supported London’s largest, and
most popular, half-marathon.
On Sunday 18 May, London’s biggest
half marathon witnessed thousands of
runners enjoying the streets, sights and
sounds of East London through
Hackney’s Mare Street Market, the town
hall, Hackney Wick, Hackney
Picturehouse, Victoria Park, and the
Hackney Empire – before the finishing
moment at Hackney Marshes.
The half marathon raised a staggering
£4 million for its official charity partners
across the weekend, which include
Alzheimer’s Society, Macmillan Cancer
Support, GOSH, St Mungos, British
Heart Foundation, Homerton Healthcare
and Shelter, along with a number of
local Hackney charities.

KANGCHENJUNGA: FROM SACRED
SUMMIT TO SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
The 13th Sir Edmund Hillary
Memorial lecture Kangchenjunga: from
Sacred Summit to Sustainable
Future will take place at the Royal
Geographical Society on Thursday
5 June.
In 1955, Joe Brown and George Band
made the first ascent of Kangchenjunga,
and in honour of a promise made to the
Chogyal of Sikkim, stopped short of
standing on its summit. The evening will
celebrate their historic first ascent and,
just as importantly, look at
Kangchenjunga and its foothills today.
How best can we pay respect to the
people whose country we travel through
and the natural environment, as Brown
and Band did in 1955?
There will be two exceptional
speakers: the record-breaking
mountaineer, Mingma David, who has
climbed all the 8,000m peaks, some
multiple times; and explorer and TV
presenter, Levison Wood, who will be
sharing insights from the research of his
new book, The Great Tree Story, that
explores the profound influence forests
have had on our planet and civilisation.
All of this will be in the presence of
HRH The Duke
of Edinburgh,
with two
specially
commissioned
films
completing
the evening.
GO APE BATTERSEA PARK
Get to know the (new) ropes at Go
Ape’s reopened flagship location in
Battersea Park, now with a revamped
Treetop Challenge and Treetop Adventure
Plus. Not only that, Battersea Park will
also be the home to Go Ape’s first
escape room, Codebreakers – a brandnew indoor puzzle adventure. Have you
got what it takes to help the ape escape?
Gather your team (2-5 people, up to 4
teams) and take on the tantalising tree
teasers at your puzzle station. Guests
have 60 minutes, the race is on. Go Ape
Battersea Park is the place for groups
looking for an adventurous day out.
Site Manager, Sophie Slade, said,
‘We’re thrilled to not only be improving
our existing offer at our popular
Battersea Park location, but also
expanding on it with an all-new kind of
experience. We know our high ropes
challenges are all about testing your
nerves while you solve the problems our
crossings throw at you, but what if we
put that in an exciting, 60-minute
codebreaking experience?’
Go Ape was founded in 2002 by
Rebecca and Tristram Mayhew and now
has grown to have 37 locations across
England, Scotland and Wales.
