THE HUNGER GAMES ARRIVES AT
THE TROUBADOUR THEATRE
A new stage adaptation of The Hunger
Games has arrived in London, bringing
Suzanne Collins’s internationally
acclaimed story to life in an immersive
theatrical setting. Adapted by Olivier
Award-winning playwright Conor
McPherson and directed by Matthew
Dunster, the production reimagines the
first novel and film for the stage,
combining large-scale spectacle with
character-driven drama. The show is
performed at the Troubadour Canary
Wharf Theatre, a newly built 1,200-seat
venue designed in-the-round to place
audiences at the centre of the action.
Mia Carragher leads the cast as
Katniss Everdeen, alongside Euan
Garrett as Peeta Mellark and Joshua
Lacey as Haymitch Abernathy. Tristan
Waterson plays Gale Hawthorne, with
Tamsin Carroll as Effie Trinket, Stavros
Demetraki as Caesar Flickerman, and
Nathan Ives-Moiba as Cinna.
McPherson’s adaptation focuses on
the emotional stakes of the story while
retaining the high-risk competition at its
core. Katniss volunteers to take her
sister’s place in the televised Hunger
Games, where tributes from each district
must fight for survival. As alliances form
and tensions rise, the production
explores themes of power, resistance,
and sacrifice, while emphasising the
relationship between Katniss and Peeta
and the pressures placed upon them by
the Capitol.
The purpose-built theatre allows for
dynamic staging, with action unfolding
around the audience to heighten
immersion. A large creative team
supports the production, blending
movement, fight choreography, and
technical design to recreate the scale of
the arena in a live environment.
The stage show draws on the
enduring popularity of Collins’s series,
which spans five novels and a major film
franchise. This new adaptation brings
the story to a new medium, transforming
the dystopian world of Panem into a live
theatrical experience.
