BECOMING AMERICA: HOW
SCIENCE SHAPED A NATION
Marking 250 years since the signing of
the Declaration of Independence,
Becoming America: How Science Shaped
a Nation, at the Science Museum, will
uncover the science that shaped and was
shaped by land, people and power
towards the emergence of the United
States. Through remarkable maps,
stunning paintings and extraordinary
instruments and artefacts, this landmark
exhibition reveals the scientific
undercurrents running through a
momentous period of history.
Delve into four decisive decades from
the 1760s to the first US presidency in the
1790s, when a range of peoples drew on
diverse scientific knowledge to navigate,
survive and cultivate the American
landscape. Becoming America connects
the colonial scientific ambition that
mapped new borders, excavated
prehistoric fossils and established
plantations with the knowledge, skills and
powerful stories of enslaved and free
African-descended peoples, and
Indigenous scientific practices that
predated the new nation and continue to
this day.
Get up close to a rare surviving 1776
print of the Declaration of Independence,
one of the most famous documents in the
Western World, and follow the stories of
King George III and George Washington,
figureheads of shifting national power
across this tumultuous period. The
exhibition features objects from the
personal collections of the monarch and
his former subject turned president,
capturing their enthusiasm for science and
their use of technology and knowledge to
project power.
This exhibition brings together the rich
and complex scientific history that shaped
the founding of a new nation, and whose
consequences are still felt 250 years later.
THE PEAKY BLINDERS:
UNDERWORLD
The legendary world of Peaky
Blinders takes over London this summer.
The Peaky Blinders: Underworld ticketed
experience near London Bridge will
transport visitors into the shadowy
underworld of Thomas Shelby and the
infamous Peaky Blinders gang.
Guests will begin in the Garrison
Tavern, a faithfully recreated post-WWI
pub, open to all and free to enter. Here,
visitors can step off the streets of
modern London and soak up the
atmosphere of the Shelby family’s
notorious watering hole, enjoy live
music, whilst sampling the drinks,
including draught beer, wine and spirits,
as well as a selection of light bites.
Lurking behind The Garrison Tavern,
an illicit Peaky Blinders Underworld
unfolds. The Underworld attraction
blends interactive gameplay with actorled encounters, bringing to life the
notorious world of the Shelby family.
The experience invites guests to
discover if they have what it takes to join
the syndicate and become a Peaky
Blinder.
Within this speakeasy world, visitors
can freely explore themed environments
such as Garrison Lane, The Bookies,
Chinatown and The Small Heath
Fairground, each offering their own
distinctive atmosphere, game-play and
hands-on challenges.
Peaky Blinders is the award-winning
British epic crime TV series created
by Steven Knight. Set within historic
railway arches close to London Bridge
Station, Arches London Bridge is under
new management by order of the Peaky
Blinders, transforming into Peaky
Blinders: Underworld.
Beyond the main experience, The
Garrison Tavern will also include a
dedicated events space, hosting a
programme of special late-night
performances, live music and themed
events that will bring the world of the
Shelby’s to life after dark.
