WEST LONDON CHORUS PERFORM
DIXIT DOMINUS
The West London Chorus will
perform their first concert at Cadogan
Hall on Sunday 12 July (18.00) – it will
be their 50th Anniversary concert. This
concert plays to the traditional strengths
of the choir with works by Handel and
Mozart, the choir are partnering with the
London Mozart Players – who are 25
years older!
Founded in 1976 by the gifted
musician and conductor John Thackray,
the Chiswick Choir, renamed the West
London Chorus in 2021, was
established to bring high-quality choral
music to the local community.
MARYLEBONE SUMMER IN THE SQUARE
Marylebone’s Summer in the Square, London’s much-loved community festival,
returns to Portman Square Garden from 7-12 July. Now in its 13th year, the six-day
event combines big-screen Wimbledon coverage with a programme of food, cultural
pop ups and wellness programme. Deck chairs line the lawns, pathways lead visitors
through pockets of activity, and the pace of the city gives way to a relaxed, village
atmosphere.
LONDON HILTON HYDE PARK
Soaring above Mayfair on the cusp of
Hyde Park, London Hilton on Park Lane
was the first Hilton in the UK and the
city's original skyscraper hotel. Now,
more than 60 years on and following a
multimillion-pound renovation
completed in 2024, it is a hotel woven
into London’s cultural, architectural and
social fabric, where timeless heritage
meets the energy of now.
The modernist concrete-framed hotel, a
trademark style of architect William
B. Tabler, has watched over decades of
city life, greeting figures from The Beatles
to Princess Diana and Keith Richards,
welcoming royalty, musicians, artists,
political figures and international
tastemakers through its revolving doors
for generations. Elevated in every sense,
there are few places where London truly
lies at your feet. The ever-changing,
unparalleled view from the hotel’s guestrooms, suites and top-floor restaurant
provide a dynamic backdrop to every stay.
Rooftops stretch towards Buckingham
Palace and Knightsbridge beyond, while
the distant silhouette of the London Eye
reminds guests they are at the centre of
one of the world’s greatest cities.
For UK travellers rediscovering the
capital, the hotel offers a taste of the city
elevated yet unwaveringly connected to
the capital's energy, culture and
character. Whilst for those arriving from
overseas, it represents the London they
have imagined, with a stay shaped by
the people, moments and atmosphere
that have long made this address part of
London life.
Its first rehearsal attracted 30 singers,
and within months the choir gave its
debut performances of Vivaldi's Gloria
and Mozart's Mass in C. Under
Thackray's direction, the choir developed
a varied repertoire before Alistair Jones
succeeded him in 1983. Over the next
three decades, Jones expanded the
choir's musical horizons, conducting
major works by Bach, Handel,
Mendelssohn, Brahms, Britten and many
others, while also premiering four of his
own oratorios.
Since 2015, Hilary Campbell has led
the choir into a new era, increasing
membership, introducing choral
scholarships, producing acclaimed
recordings, and presenting notable
premieres, including the UK premiere of
Bob Chilcott's The Rainbow, continuing
the choir's tradition of musical
excellence.
