Be in the audience for a landmark
performance as the Royal Choral Society
celebrates 150 years of Good Friday
performances of Handel’s Messiah in the
magnificent Royal Albert Hall. The Royal
Choral Society will present Handel’s
Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall at

Since the first performance in 1876,
this tradition has resonated with
generations of concert-goers who come
for the wondrous experience of hearing
Handel’s spine-tingling choruses and
exquisite arias. Only the 1940-1 Blitz
and the 2020-1 Covid pandemic have
prevented this annual performances of
the UK’s favourite choral work and it is
thought that the Royal Choral Society,
who have performed the magnificent
work around 280 times, have sung it
more times than any other choir. Don't
miss one of London’s quintessential
Easter events.
This special edition is conducted by
Richard Cooke, with the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, organist
Richard Pearce and soloists soprano
Mary Bevan, mezzo-soprano Anna
Stéphany, tenor Jamie MacDougall and
bass Matthew Rose.
The Royal Choral Society is one of
the United Kingdom’s most
distinguished amateur choirs. Founded
in 1871, it has built a reputation for
performing large-scale choral works with
exceptional musicality and passion.
The choir regularly appears at the
Royal Albert Hall, where it presents
major works by composers including
Verdi and Elgar. Comprising dedicated
singers from diverse backgrounds, the
Society collaborates with leading
orchestras and soloists, continuing a
proud tradition of bringing inspiring
choral music to wide audiences across
the country and beyond.
