STACEY MUTKIN: YOUNG DUDES
Stacey Mutkin is an award-winning
photographer who began her career as a
press photographer. In 1989 she won the
BT Press Award and in 2000 the BIPP
Press and PR Award. In 2022, her
photograph ‘Storm on the Lido’ (pictured
below) was selected and sold at the Royal
Academy’s Summer Exhibition. The
exhibition ‘Young Dudes’ from 8-13 June
is her third exhibition at 54 The Gallery.
Stacey's style is informal and
spontaneous, drawing on her press
experience to capture the moment which
expresses the character of the subject or
situation. Examples of her work have been
used in magazines, books, film and
company promotions. She is an Associate
of the Royal Photographic Society, and
Licentiate of the British Institute of
Professional Photography.
She says of her latest exhibition:
‘Throughout my photographic career I
have always sought to capture moments
in time revealing the truth in a subject or
situation. ‘Young dudes’ is an exhibition
which chronicles that unique period of
childhood and youth when one
experienced the thrill of doing something,
going somewhere, being someone for the
first time. This new collection is very
personal to me, gathering images of my
sons and their friends as they learned to
experience and delight in their world.’
Stacey divides her time between
Herefordshire and London, with her dog,
named Tiger, her husband and,
occasionally, her now-grown-up children.
HACKNEY ART WEEK EXPANDS
Returning this month, Hackney Art
Week is a borough-wide celebration of
contemporary creativity, bringing
together more than 130 artists and
creatives across 60 venues in one of
London’s most dynamic cultural areas.
Far from a traditional art week, Hackney
becomes a loose constellation of
happenings. Markets, exhibitions, murals,
workshops – popping up across studios,
streets and neighbourhood spaces, where
exhibitions, food, music and performance
intersect in unexpected ways.
Long recognised as one of London’s
most concentrated creative communities,
Hackney continues to shape the city’s
cultural identity through its artists,
photographers, musicians and writers.
Yet, as access to space becomes
increasingly constrained, the need for
meaningful, independent platforms has
never been more urgent. Hackney Art
Week responds directly to this moment –
creating opportunities for artists to present
work, connect with audiences, and build
community within the neighbourhoods
that sustain them.
The festival brings art into the spaces
people already inhabit – from cafés,
hairdressers and record shops to pubs.
Works by participating artists will be
available to purchase throughout the
festival, with a selection of limited-edition
Hackney Art Week prints released in
support of local charity Hackney Giving.
