HAYDN TRUMPET CONCERTO AT
CADOGAN WITH HANOVER BAND
Star trumpeter David Blackadder joins
renowned period-instrument orchestra
The Hanover Band at 19.30 on
21 September at Cadogan Hall, for a
special performance of Haydn’s muchloved Trumpet Concerto – played on the
unique type of instrument for which the
work was originally composed.
Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto was the
first concerto written for the newly
invented ‘keyed’ trumpet, a revolutionary
instrument that allowed players to
access notes and tonalities unavailable
on the natural trumpet of the time. The
innovation opened up new possibilities
for composers and performers, and
Haydn’s virtuosic concerto remains one
of its most celebrated showcases.
Blackadder, whose playing was seen
by an estimated 1.9 billion viewers
worldwide during the Royal Wedding of
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will
perform on a replica keyed trumpet
developed in the late 18th century.
The performance offers audiences a
rare opportunity to hear Haydn’s
concerto on an instrument closely
modelled on the one that inspired his
groundbreaking writing. The Haydn
forms part of a programme that also
features Schubert’s quintessentially
Romantic Ninth Symphony, ‘The Great C
Major’, alongside Beethoven’s dramatic
overture to Coriolanus.
Together, the works explore the
ebullience, drama and emotional depth at
the heart of The Hanover Band’s highClassical repertoire.
The Cadogan Hall concert marks a
welcome return to the London venue for
The Hanover Band and brings the
orchestra’s latest tour to a close,
following performances in Arundel and
Malvern. It also represents another
milestone in the orchestra’s ongoing
collaboration with conductor Leon
Bosch, who is working with the
ensemble on a project to record the
complete orchestral works of Haydn’s
unjustly neglected contemporary,
Johannes Sperger.

Fred Astaire’ and ‘Super-Paganini’
respectively, McRae and Vassilev have
earned numerous plaudits for their
mastery of ballet and tap dancing and
violin musicianship. Their distinctive
qualities come together in this new
venture in the intimate space of
the Linbury Theatre.
Directed by acclaimed artist, theatre,
film and opera director Natalie
Abrahami, this special event unfolds in
