THE 70TH BFI LONDON FILM
FESTIVAL: WATER BODY
The 70th BFI London Film Festival
invites audiences to experience
storytelling in new ways with LFF
Expanded, its programme of immersive
art, extended reality and video gaming.
A highlight is Water Body, an
immersive audiovisual installation by
acclaimed UK studio Marshmallow Laser
Feast, created in collaboration with
author Robert Macfarlane, sound artist
James Bulley and ceramicist Ludmilla
Balkis. Presented at St Martin-in-theFields, Trafalgar Square, the installation
explores water as the connective tissue
of life, using global Earth systems data
to reveal its continual movement through
rivers, oceans, landscapes and living
beings. The result is an atmospheric
exploration of the hidden connections
between our planet and ourselves.
Elsewhere, Red The Ocean Around U,
presented at BFI IMAX, offers a
dreamlike digital environment from
studio Crosslucid and writer Orion
Facey. The experience evolves according
to the presence and decisions of each
visitor, inviting audiences to consider
how our relationship with artificial
intelligence might change when
technology begins asking the questions.
At BFI Southbank, the VR Lounge
presents SOLWATA, an immersive
documentary narrated by Mark Ruffalo,
exploring saltwater communities in the
Solomon Islands, alongside The World
Came Flooding In, an XR experience
created with flood-affected communities
in Australia.
Completing the programme, the
Games Lounge returns to BFI IMAX with
five international titles spanning puzzles,
interactive visual novels and narrative
adventures.
Water Body runs from 3 to 18
October at St Martin-in-the-Fields. The
VR Lounge runs from 7 to 18 October,
while the Games Lounge is open during
the same dates and is free to enter.
