RACHEL DEACON AND LARA BOWEN
AT J/M GALLERY
Ingo Fincke Gallery will present a
joint exhibition of new work by artists
Rachel Deacon and Lara Bowen at J/M
Gallery, 230 Portobello Road, from 15 to
20 October. The exhibition brings
together two distinct yet complementary
approaches to painting, exploring
abstraction, memory, gesture and the
relationship between what is seen and
what remains hidden.
Deacon’s abstract paintings emerge
through an intuitive and responsive
process, with form, movement and
spatial relationships taking precedence
over predetermined outcomes. Drawing
on decades of experience as a figurative
painter, she combines instinct with a
strong understanding of composition,
allowing each work to evolve through a
dialogue between control and chance.
Positive and negative space interact
across the canvas, creating rhythm,
depth and movement. The paintings can
be viewed from different orientations,
encouraging an open-ended engagement
with works that continually reveal new
possibilities.
Bowen’s Palimpsests series explores
the relationship between painting,
writing and memory. Each work begins
with a handwritten letter addressed to
someone known, someone lost, a
younger self or simply thoughts that
require expression. As layers of colour
and gesture develop, the words become
partially obscured, leaving fragments of
handwriting and traces of conversations
beneath the painted surface.
The title refers to a surface retaining
evidence of what came before, reflecting
Bowen’s interest in how people, places
and experiences continue to shape us.
Together, the artists’ works offer a
contemplative exploration of process,
memory and transformation.
Ingo Fincke Gallery is an independent
business owned by sister and brother
duo, Kira Fincke and Ben Fincke.
ART OF LONDON BRINGS THE
FRENCH RIVIERA TO LONDON
This autumn, award-winning cultural
initiative Art of London will bring a burst
of Mediterranean sunshine, colour and
creativity to London’s West End with the
launch of Step Into the French Riviera, a
free immersive public art experience in
partnership with the Royal Academy of
Arts and inspired by its forthcoming
exhibition, Painting the French Riviera.
Launching across Piccadilly, Jermyn
St and Mayfair in October, three artworks
from the exhibition will be transformed
into larger-than-life installations, inviting
city-goers to step inside the frame, snap
their own Riviera moment, and explore
both the paintings and the heart of
London in a whole new way.
Combining colour, sound and scent,
the trail takes visitors on a sensory
journey from the vibrant coastal scenes
of Raoul Dufy and André Derain to an
immersive world inspired by Yves
Klein’s International Klein Blue, one of
the most defining artistic signatures of
the twentieth century.
Running throughout October, Step Into
the French Riviera comes as new research
from the Art Fund shows that even short
encounters with art can support wellbeing
and reduce stress, making it the perfect
cultural escape for Londoners looking to
brighten the season.
