OSCAR WILDE’S SALOME AT
THEATRE ROYAL HAYMARKET
Gesher Theatre, one of the world’s
leading international companies, will
return to the UK for the first time in over
25 years with a bold new production of
Oscar Wilde’s Salome. Directed by
Maxim Didenko, the play will perform
at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from
30 September to 11 October.
Written in 1891, Wilde’s one-act play
was originally banned in Britain for its
daring content. Salome tells the biblical
tale of the eponymous stepdaughter of
Herod Antipas, whose fascination with
the prophet John the Baptist turns into
obsession. When John spurns her
advances, Salome responds with her
infamous, deadly dance, a moment that
has resonated through art, theatre, and
literature for over a century. The play is
celebrated for its lyrical poetry, dark
sensuality, and exploration of power,
eroticism, and forbidden desire.
Maxim Didenko, one of Europe’s
leading directors, brings his highly
stylised approach to the production,
promising a visually striking and
emotionally intense experience. The
production features designs by Galya
Solodovnikova, winner of the 2024 Off
West End Award for Best Set, lighting by
Gleb Filshtinsky, and an evocative score
composed by French musician Louis
Lebe. Together, they transform Wilde’s
decadent world into a hypnotic stage
experience where beauty and danger
intertwine, and every movement carries
dramatic weight.
Gesher Theatre, founded in Jaffa in
1991, is renowned for blending cultural
influences and creating bridges between
communities through the performing
arts. With a repertory company of
immigrant artists, the theatre has staged
over 60 productions worldwide and
received acclaim from The Times, which
described it as ‘one of the greatest and
most important troupes in the world.’
The company has toured extensively
across Europe, North America, and
Canada, and returns to London for the
first time since its 1999 Barbican
performance.
This production marks a significant
West End event, bringing Wilde’s
controversial masterpiece to a new
generation of audiences.
